At Liberty Oil Australia we are proud to support organisations that play a vital role in keeping regional and coastal communities safe - and few organisations embody that commitment more than Marine Rescue Queensland.
Operating across one of Australia’s busiest and most iconic boating regions, Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ) Whitsunday provides critical marine rescue, emergency response and safety support services throughout the Whitsunday region and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Their coverage area spans more than 13,000 square kilometres of coastline and waterways.
A Lifeline for the Whitsundays Community
Founded in 1964 by a small group of local volunteers concerned about safety on the water, MQR Whitsundays has grown into a highly skilled rescue organisation made up of more than 80 dedicated volunteers.
Today, the team responds to:
- Marine search and rescue operations
- Emergency medical evacuations (medivacs)
- Vessel breakdowns and tow assists
- Support operations alongside Police, Ambulance and Fire services
- Emergency assistance to island communities and visitors
Their crews are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, helping thousands of recreational boaters, commercial operators and tourists enjoy the Whitsundays safely.
A remarkable record of service
Over the past decade, MQR Whitsundays has continued to grow in both capability and operational demand.
Some of their outstanding achievements include:
- Managing hundreds of marine rescue activations annually
- Recording over 170 assistance requests in a single year
- Completing thousands of volunteer hours on the water every year
- Providing critical medivac support from remote islands and offshore vessels
- Expanding from a small volunteer group into one of Queensland’s most respected marine rescue units
The organisation also operates purpose-built rescue vessels specifically designed for the demanding Whitsunday environment, including offshore rescue operations, shallow reef access and emergency towing capability.
